Dr. Thomas Mullikin

Director of the GAIAS Foundation

Dr. Thomas Mullikin is an attorney, author, professor and award-winning documentarian whose environmental and energy law practice has taken him to every continent.

Mullikin served with the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General Corps as an International Legal Officer with the 360th Civil Affairs Brigade (Airborne) and Trial Counsel. Mullikin retired from military service in 2018 as major general / commander of the S.C. State Guard and President of the State Guard Association of the United States (SGAUS).

Dr. Mullikin is the founding chair of the gubernatorially established S.C. Floodwater Commission. He is a research professor at Coastal Carolina University (School of Coastal Environment), a professor of practice at the University of South Carolina (Hospitality Retail and Sport Management), Adjunct Professor at the University of South Carolina School of Law and a visiting professor at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito – Galapagos campus. He serves as a Board Member of the South Carolina Conservation Bank, as a member of the S.C. Energy Advisory Council; co-chair, International Environmental Law Committee of the American Bar Association; membership officer, LAWASIA (the Law Association for Asia and the Pacific) Environmental Law Committee; Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, director of the Mullikin Institute for Environmental Law and Policy at Coastal Carolina University; chairman of Global Eco Adventures. 

As Director of the GAIAS Foundation. Dr. Mullikin has brought context to his work as a senior environmental attorney where he has studied environmental issues and concerns worldwide. Notably, he has logged certified SCUBA dives in every ocean on Earth and has summited more than 20 mountains including peaks on every continent.

In recognition of his global environmental work, he has been inducted as a Fellow in the Explorers Club (New York), a Fellow in the Royal Geographical Society (London); and he has been engaged as a “National Geographic Expert” with the National Geographic Society.

In addition to his myriad awards, honors, and military decorations. Dr. Mullikin is a recipient of the Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina’s highest civilian award.
