Honey Project

What do we do?
Obtain, for the first time in Ecuador, a physical-chemical and biological characterization of important native Ecuadorian bee products according to their floral origin. These results will allow us to know the honey potential and characteristics of the main beekeeping products in the area.

How do we do it?
We work directly with beekeepers in the region to sample their apiaries. We will take samples of honey, pollen and bee bread for analysis of physical-chemical parameters that determine its quality and its possible relationship with its floral origin. We will also study the nutritional and functional potential of these bee products, as well as their antimicrobial capacity against important pathogens in both human and animal medicine.

Why do we do it?
Ecuador is one of the most megadiverse countries in the world, with a floral variety that can be used in the production of a great variety of honeys and other bee products throughout the year. Despite this, knowledge about the potential of the country's beekeeping products in terms of quality and biological properties is scarce. This has resulted in a lack of interest in the practice of beekeeping at the national level and the conservation of different species of bees.
